On Yellow Hearts

This post was written thanks to a reminder by BombayAddict and Paromita.

In the course of my work, I had the opportunity to witness an open heart surgery, technically a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG or cabbage, as the doctors call it). You have to go in for CABG when the blood vessels that supply fresh oxygenated blood to the muscles of the heart (yeah, they need blood too), the Coronary Artery gets blocked. One of the chief reasons for such blockage happens to be fat deposits.

One of the patients, as slim as he appeared to be had a heart that was distinctly yellow. Not a lemony yellow, but a sort of dull yellow. The Cardiovascular surgeon pointed it out to me and said that the yellow was all due to fat. Yes, this slim man had managed to get a lot of fat right into his ticker. He had multiple blocks that had to be bypassed so that his heart could keep on beating longer.

It is a scary thought because you might be slim with very little body fat, but there’s a high chance that a lot of that fat might have gone where you would be least aware and where it might be the most dangerous.

Cure? Yes, there are meds and there is surgery, but it’s all temporary. With today’s lifestyle, one would sooner or later fall prey to heart disease.

What can we do? Switch to a healthier diet. No more plateful of fried samosas for me. Exercise? Of course. Some form of cardiovascular exercise that makes the heart pump more for a while will keep those arteries healthier for a longer time. Do consult your doctor on what’s combination is the best for you.

But this one thing is for sure. The earlier you start, the better it is for you.
